3. Classes of Membership

There are basically two classes of membership:

  • corporate (with a right to vote and use the designate letters)
  • non-corporate (do not have the right to vote).
3.1 Corporate: Founding Members (F.PFM)

The eight founding members of the Institute.

3.2 Corporate: Fellow (F.PFM)
  • Persons holding senior positions
  • At least 28 years of age
  • Membership of recognised professional institutions for at least 7 years
  • Minimum 1 year experience in H.K.
  • Nominated by at least 2 F.PFM with a reference letter from the principal proposer for the applicant.
  • Submission of written account on experience with relevance on FM
  • Satisfy the Committee in areas of FM related experience and other requirements
3.3 Corporate: Member (PFM)
  • At least 21 years of age

  • Membership of recognised professional institutions (list) for at least 2 years or holder of recognised academic qualification with extensive experience on FM and having passed the APC or other assessments as prescribed by the HKIFM.

  • Minimum 1 year experience in H.K.

  • Applicant must be nominated by at least 1 F.PFM and 2 PFM

  • Submission of written account on experience with relevance on FM

  • Satisfy the Committee in areas of FM related experience and other requirements

3.4 Non-corporate: Honorary Fellow (Hon.PFM)
  • Persons holding senior positions

  • Persons who have significant contributions to the field of FM as recognised and approved by the council

  • By invitation

3.5 Non-corporate: Associate (AHKIFM)

Practitioner having recognised academic qualification and/or FM related experience may apply for associate membership. The designated letter for this class of membership is AHKIFM.

Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) is normally held annually, or on need basis, to assess the professional competence of Associate Member, before they are admitted as Member of the Institute ("Road Map for Associate Member to Corporate Member").


There are three number of grades under this class of membership, namely Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 ("Road Map for Associate Member to Corporate Member"), in accordance with individual's compliance with the HKIFM's Core Competency.

The purpose of the above-mentioned grading is to facilitate individual member's grade advancement. There are specific qualifications for each grade of Associate Membership ("Road Map for Associate Member to Corporate Member"). Individual member can apply for grade advancement once these qualifications are fulfilled.

3.6 Non-corporate: Student

Current students of formal academic program/course in Facility Management may apply for the class of Student.  An official endorsement from the college/institute must be enclosed with the application.
